Opportunity for U.S. teachers: Fulbright Teachers for Global Classrooms Program (Fulbright TGC)

Why I became a teacher: to show students how the world really works. How our school developed an international approach to learning.By the time today's toddlers join the workforce, the ability to work globally and cross-culturally will be mandatory -- not just the "nice to have" it was years ago. But are our teachers prepared to help raise global children? While it's important for parents to help prepare their children for the global marketplace, educators play an equally important role in developing cross-cultural competency and knowledge.

Teachers with global perspectives can help foster increased cultural understanding and support more young people to think, act and live as global citizens. All teachers should be properly trained and prepared to teach all subjects through a global lens, not just social studies and language, in order to help prepare students to compete and thrive in the global marketplace.

But global competence training is not part of the standard U. So how do we help them? Certainly getting involved and supporting the Global Teacher Education project will be helpful. The group was established to support the internationalization of teacher preparation, and it partners with colleges of education to help more teachers become globally competent before they enter the classroom.

In addition to bringing the world into the classroom, many organizations offer creative opportunities for teacher exchanges and encounters abroad for them to then bring back to enhance their lessons inside the classroom. The following list of programs and awards are excellent opportunities for teachers to experience the cultural context of the subject or language they teach: Teachers for Global Classrooms Program TGC provides a professional development opportunity for middle and high school teachers from the United States to participate in a program aimed at globalizing teaching and learning in their classrooms.

TGC is a program of the ECA and administered by IREX, an international nonprofit organization providing thought leadership and innovative programs to promote positive lasting change globally. The deadline is March Hilton Honors Teacher Treks gives teachers the opportunity to spend three weeks abroad in the summer exploring and experiencing culture firsthand, or teaching English as a Second Language in a Hilton Worldwide hotel.

Applications for the grant can be found on the IIE's website. Although the deadline just passed Feb. It is open to U. The Distinguished Fulbright Awards in Teaching Program recognizes and encourages excellence in teaching in the United States and abroad.

Fellows begin with group instruction on these topics, school visits, meetings with education leaders, and cultural excursions and workshops.

Fellows then travel in pairs or trios to communities around the country, where they have the opportunity to observe classrooms, interact with administrators, and teach or co-teach their own lessons with international educators who have spent a considerable amount of time on an exchange program in the United States, and thus are familiar with the U.

The travel experience concludes with a debriefing session during which educators reconvene and reflect on their experiences in country before returning to the United States. Global Education Guide During the program, Fulbright Teachers for Global Classrooms fellows create a global education guide that serves as a resource for their local community to build global awareness and mutual understanding.

Sponsored by Brown University's Watson Institute for International Studies, this website offers videos from scholars and matching lesson plans on current topics. The curricular lessons are designed to allow students to act as decision makers as they examine crucial points in history.

Students can use historical and contemporary primary-source documents, maps, editorial cartoons, and more to develop their critical-thinking, creativity, innovation, and collaboration skills, as well as their media, technology, and civic literacies. Through the Cleveland Museum of Art's award-winning, low-cost distance learning program, students can view art and artifacts in the museum's collection and interact with museum educators. Lessons range from Fauvism to foreign languages, from Mesopotamia to math.

Scholarships for the distance learning programs are available for low-wealth school districts. The Global Dimension website is managed by Think Global, an education charity that promotes global learning. One World Education is a nonprofit program that showcases writing by middle and high school students in an effort to promote youth literacy.

In their reflections, students discuss their experiences in another country or with another culture as a starting point for conversation about a timely topic. The One World Curriculum provides teachers with resources to help them infuse lessons about global issues across the content areas.

Each month, the website shares new project-based learning activities and materials. This unique website taps into the experiences, knowledge, and writing of Peace Corps volunteers to create engaging lesson plans, classroom materials, and multimedia resources.
